A planche is not an unusually difficult push-up. It is a straight-arm balance in which the shoulders move far beyond the hands while the body remains suspended, so success depends on wrist tolerance, scapular control, leverage-specific strength, and patient technical practice.

Separate the foundation from the skill

Push-ups build useful pressing strength, but a planche changes the problem. The elbows remain locked, the shoulder angle and scapular demand change, and the forward lean creates a long lever around the hands. A strong Push-up or Archer Push-up is therefore supporting preparation, not proof that the wrists and straight-arm tissues are ready for a full planche.

Before a dedicated planche block, establish pain-free floor support, controlled push-ups through a consistent range, a hollow-body position, and a planche lean with locked elbows. You should be able to exit every support deliberately. These are readiness gates, not promises of rapid progress. Body proportions and training history strongly affect leverage, and no responsible schedule can guarantee a date for a full hold.

Define the positions you will measure

A valid repetition or hold needs a written standard. In a planche lean, spread the fingers, rotate the elbow pits forward without forcing the joint, push the floor away, and move the shoulders ahead of the wrists while keeping the feet lightly supported. Measure shoulder position relative to a floor mark or film from the same side angle. More forward is progress only if elbow lock, scapular protraction, and pelvic position remain intact.

In a tuck planche, the feet leave the floor but the knees shorten the lever. The Advanced Tuck Planche opens the hip angle and places the knees farther behind the arms. Later stages can include a Single-leg Planche, straddle, and full Planche Hold. Those labels are useful only when the body shape is consistent. A higher hip or bent elbow creates a different, easier task.

Use parallettes if they make wrist loading more tolerable, but treat floor and parallettes as separate variations. Rings are not an automatic progression: a Planche on Rings adds instability and should follow substantial stable-surface preparation.

Organize three kinds of work

Skill practice teaches the exact balance and body line. Specific strength work overloads the nearest manageable shape through holds, leans, band assistance, or controlled entries. General strength work uses push-ups, pike pressing, rowing, and lower-intensity trunk training to maintain a broad base. Mixing all three into repeated maximal attempts makes fatigue difficult to control.

Put skill first after a thorough wrist and shoulder warm-up. Use four to six sets of a hold or entry lasting only while the target shape is clear. End each set before shaking, elbow bend, or hip drift. Rest enough that the next attempt is not merely survival. Then perform three to five sets of the primary specific-strength drill and two or three supporting exercises.

Band assistance can expose the full line while reducing effective load. Place the band at the hips and use the Planche with Bands guide, but record the band and setup. A thicker band, shorter attachment, or different contact point changes assistance. Bands supplement rather than replace unassisted leans and tuck work, where progress is easier to compare.

A twelve-week periodized framework

Weeks one through four emphasize capacity. Train planche twice weekly with at least two days between demanding sessions. Day one uses planche leans for five submaximal holds, pseudo-planche push-ups for three sets of five to eight, an ordinary push-up variation for three sets, and hollow-body work. Day two uses supported tuck entries for six singles, a lighter lean for four holds, Handstand Pike Press or pike push-ups for three sets, and pulling work to balance the shoulder program.

In week four, reduce planche sets by about one third while keeping the same shapes. This is not a test week. It lowers accumulated fatigue and gives you a cleaner view of wrist comfort and hold quality.

Weeks five through eight emphasize the weakest specific stage. If you cannot float from the lean, prioritize toe-assisted tuck shifts and controlled entries. If the tuck is stable but opening the hips fails, use advanced-tuck pulses and band-assisted advanced-tuck holds. Day one is the heavier leverage day; day two uses an easier shape for more technically consistent time. Keep general pressing at maintenance volume rather than adding every new drill.

Week eight again reduces total sets. Compare standardized side-view video with week one: shoulder travel, elbow lock, hip position, and total seconds of valid holds. Do not count a longer hold if its shape changed.

Weeks nine through eleven convert the new capacity into skill practice. Begin each session with three to five attempts at the hardest shape you can enter reliably, not the full planche by default. Follow with the prior progression for three back-off sets. Use a band-assisted longer shape on one day and unassisted shorter-lever work on the other. Week twelve cuts volume in half and includes only two or three well-rested benchmark attempts after several easier days.

Concrete advancement and regression rules

Advance a hold when you can complete five sets of eight to twelve clean seconds across two sessions, with no increase in wrist or elbow symptoms the next day. Instead of jumping directly to the next named shape, change one lever: move the knees a little farther back, open one hip, reduce band assistance, or increase the lean by a small measured distance.

For dynamic drills, advance after all prescribed sets reach the top of the repetition range with locked elbows and no loss of protraction. If valid hold time falls by more than roughly one quarter for two sessions, or discomfort changes how you load the hand, step back one leverage and reduce sets for the remainder of the week. Persistent pain is a reason for clinical assessment, not a challenge to overcome with more warm-up.

Never train repeated failed full-planche attempts as conditioning. A miss provides little high-quality practice and can deliver a large, poorly controlled load. Use the most difficult shape in which entry, hold, and exit are all trainable.

A sustainable weekly layout

Monday can hold the primary planche session. Tuesday is lower body and pulling. Wednesday is rest or easy aerobic work. Thursday is the secondary planche session. Friday is lower body and pulling or complete rest. The weekend includes one general full-body session only if shoulders and wrists have recovered; otherwise it remains easy.

This layout protects skill quality without pretending that advanced calisthenics is a complete program. Continue legs, pulling, and aerobic activity. Avoid adding high-volume handstands, dips, and heavy pressing on every non-planche day, because those exercises still draw on the same shoulder and wrist recovery budget.

Judge the block by controllable evidence

The strongest signs of progress are a farther lean at the same shape, a longer valid hold at the same leverage, less assistance in an identical setup, and better entries without extra attempts. A full planche may require many blocks, and some blocks will consolidate rather than advance the named progression. Periodization cannot bypass anatomy or tissue adaptation; it simply gives hard practice an appropriate dose, a measurable target, and planned opportunities to recover.
